Trial in a high-profile case relating to V.N. Sudhakaran, once a foster son of Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, began afresh on Friday. Mr. Sudhakaran is facing a charge of illegal possession of heroin in 2001.
The proceedings were deferred earlier by judges who heard the matter following receipt of letters which threw aspersions on them. Now, Principal Sessions Court for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances cases began the trial afresh. C. Chinnappan, Principal Sessions Judge for NDPS cases, marked a document based on examination of a prosecution witness, V. Selvamani, then Inspector of Police, Abiramapuram. The witness was also cross-examined by defence. The Judge posted the matter for examination of accused on July 23. — Staff Reporter
