Coimbatore: Twenty-four-year-old Gopalakrishnan, a visually challenged and hailing from Hope College area in Peelamedu, will be one among those taking part in the Sankara Beas Kund Trek from June 7 to 16.
Seshadri of National Adventure and Leadership School in R.S. Puram said that Mr. Gopalakrishnan was earlier working at a Business Process Outsourcing firm.
Now he is unemployed and his income is Rs. 2,000 given by the Government as disability assistance. The school is footing the bill of the trekking programme.
Ketan, another visually challenged person from Sight Savers International, will accompany him.
Mr. Gopalakrishnan will trek 50 km in Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of 12,500 ft during a pilot programme.
The main trek will be between October 1 and September 20.
Those in the age group of 8 to 70 can take part in the trekking programme. No special skills are required. The trek aims to raise funds for the charitable eye care programmes of Sankara Eye Care Institutions.
The institution performs 500 free eye surgeries to help the poorest of the poor.
