Awareness meetings to be held
ERODE: The District Forest Officer, Sathyamangalam, Sampath Lal Gupta on Friday organised a 'Viruksh Mela' (tree festival) at Bannari on Friday on the directions of Conservator of Forests Pannerselvam.
Inaugurating the mela, he said day-by-day the number of trees was decreasing due to various reasons. Sometime back, thousands of trees were cut and smuggled. So, the Forest Department had decided to undertake massive sapling planting drive. He told the people not to destroy trees and warned that poachers would be punished.
He said to create awareness among the people on preservation of trees and the need for growing more trees, awareness meeting would be conducted in all villages in Sathyamangalam forest area.
SHGs to be involved
He said if a sponsor grants Rs. 300, it would be handed over to a Self-Help Group along with five tree saplings and the group should maintain the trees for three years.
Assistant Conservator Sathish, MLAs K.R. Kandasamy and P. Chidambaram, Chairman, Sathyamangalam Panchayat Union, Duraisamy and others spoke.
