Transgenders should study law and equip themselves with legal acumen, said Jecintha Martin, Sub Judge, Madurai District Legal Services Authority (MDLSA).

At an awareness programme held here on Wednesday, while urging the transgenders to pursue higher education, she said only knowledge would help uplift them.

She promised to help those who were interested in pursuing a law degree.

Bharathi Kannamma, a transgender activist, said the government should revoke Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code “as it violated the fundamental right of life and liberty and the right to equality guaranteed under the constitution.”

Nearly 20 members of the transgender community took part in the interaction session, organised by MDLSA and Bharathi Kannamma Trust.
