A three-day residential camp for members of School Management Committees (SMC) was held at 22 blocks in the district by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) from March 12-15.

Around 300 members took part in the programme held at the Corporation Higher Secondary School, Vadakovai and Corporation Middle School, Wetrabanpettai.The SMCs were formed under the SSA scheme recently to monitor the functioning of schools and chart out development plans for the school, said Supervisor, SSA, Coimbatore city, G. Vasanthi.

Twenty members consisting of headmasters, parents, ward member/councillors, members of NGOs, educationists, and teachers are part of SMCs in schools. SMC members from 45 schools took part in the programme, she said.

The training included topics like The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009, main components of SSA, children's rights, whole school development, learning difficulties faced by children and responsibilities of SMC. Block resource teacher educators and resource persons from SSA conducted classes for the members, Ms. Vasanthi said.

A health awareness session by Dr. M.S. Ramaiah was conducted for the SMC members. Vaccination for chicken pox, small pox, health problems in women, orthopaedic problems, food habits for diabetics and child care were the topics discussed in the health awareness session. According to M. Brigit Vimala, teacher at St. Mary's Primary School and resource person for the programme, the training programme was aimed at acquainting the SMC members about the teaching method followed for various classes in schools.
