A month-long SCUBA (Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus) diving course organised by the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve Trust along with People's Action for Development, for coastal youth concluded at Vembar in the district on June 26. In all, 13 youth underwent the training given by instructors of BARRACUDA diving centre in Goa.
Officials said that the main objective of the training was to promote research on the coral ecosystem in the Gulf of Mannar and help the youth learn techniques on rescue operations during disasters.
Commandant S M Singh of Indian Coast Guard issued course certificates to the youth. S. Shenbagamoorthy, Wildlife Warden, Ramanathapuram, was also present.
