Signals to be on until 3 a.m. tomorrow

CHENNAI: Traffic police have made special arrangements in view of New Year eve celebrations on Thursday. According to a release issued by the police, traffic signals would be on until 3 a.m. on Friday. Signal violation would attract penalty.

Vehicular traffic would not be allowed between Napier Bridge and Gandhi statue on Kamarajar Salai after 10.30 p.m. on Thursday. All vehicles coming from north would be diverted at Adams Road-Kamarajar Salai junction towards Anna Salai and all vehicles coming from south would be diverted at Gandhi Statue-Kamarajar Salai junction towards Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai.

Traffic police, volunteers, traffic wardens, road safety patrol personnel and home guards across the city would guide motorists to designated parking lots. Patrolling would be intense on Kamarajar Salai, East Coast Road, Anna Salai, EVR Salai, Poonamallee High Road and other accident-prone stretches.

Rash driving, speeding, use of mobile phone while driving, triple riding, pillion riding without helmet, driving without seat belt would invite police action, the release said. Such violators and their vehicles are liable to be detained under Section 207 of Motor Vehicle Act.

To enable smoother flow in Besant Nagar, the police said vehicles should be parked on Besant Nagar IV, V and VII Avenue instead of VI Avenue (Elliots Beach). All automatic signals in the city would function on Thursday night.
