Pollachi: Traffic on the Pollachi – Valparai ghat section came to a standstill from midnight on Wednesday till 9.30 a.m. on Thursday following a road block caused by a boulder that fell on to the road.

According to reports reaching here, around midnight, a huge boulder between the 19th and 20th hairpin bend near Kavarkal Estate rolled on to the road completely blocking traffic. After dawn, the Highways Department officials rushed men and material besides crane and earth movers and moved the boulder to the roadside paving the way for traffic to resume. Traffic returned to normalcy by 10 a.m. after nearly nine hours.

However, the continuing rains led to uprooting of trees at many places along the ghat section. Uprooting of a tree near Ayyarpadi Hospital resulted in the traffic being diverted via Karumalai Balaji Temple. Many areas along the streams and rivers in Valparai continued to witness a heavy inflow of water leaving many housing colonies of the plantation workers inundated.
