CHENNAI: Tension gripped Ambattur on Tuesday evening after an altercation between an MTC bus driver and a youth near a bus depot. Traffic in the area was thrown out of gear for hours.

According to police, the trouble began when driver Arumugam was taking the bus inside the depot and a motorcycle was parked on the way. The rider Ismail allegedly refused to remove the two-wheeler. An argument between them turned into a scuffle and Ismail took shelter at a nearby police booth. Soon, several MTC crew arrived and began arguing with the police for sheltering Ismail. Agitated commuters picked up arguments with the police and MTC crew. Buses were parked haphazardly affecting traffic.

Police resorted to a mild lathicharge in which Srinivasan, the driver of a bus on route 47D, was injured. Senior police officials, including the Chennai Sububan Commissioner S.R. Jangid, rushed to the spot. Stone throwing was reported in which a few police personnel were injured.
