: Tiruchi Corporation has warned of stern action against traders occupying pedestrian pathways and other public spaces at Gandhi Market in the city.

Encroachments would be removed without any prior notice, Corporation Commissioner V.P.Thandapani said in a statement on Saturday after inspecting places around the market where the Corporation had taken up an eviction drive on Friday.

Mr.Thandapani said traders should confine to the space earmarked for them and desist from encroaching upon pedestrian footpaths. The Corporation has taken steps to remove such encroachments in public interest. Criminal action would be initiated against repeat offenders, he said.

The Commissioner also inspected the work on construction of a platform, sanctioned at a cost of Rs.13 lakhs, near the market for collection and transport of solid waste. City Engineer S.Raja Mohamed, Executive Engineers R.Chandran and S.Arunachalam were present.
