Attempt to block traffic at 18 places in Tirunelveli district
TIRUNELVELI: A total of 4,168 persons, including 832 women, were detained by the police when members of various trade unions attempted to block vehicular traffic at 18 places in the district on Friday in protest against the spiralling prices of essential commodities and pressing various other demands.
In the protest staged at Tirunelveli Junction, the police arrested 582 persons, including 84 women.
When the trade union members tried to block traffic at Valliyoor, Thirukkurunkudi, Ambasamudram, Veeravanallur, Alwarkurichi, Vickramasingapuram, Mukkoodal, Nanguneri, Alangulam, Paavoorchathiram, Tenkasi, Shencottai, Puliyangudi, Sivagiri, Kadayanallur, Vasudevanallur and Sankarankovil, the police arrested 3,586 protestors, including 748 women. The protestors said that the State and Central Governments must ban speculative trading of essential commodities since it would control the inflation while strengthening the public distribution system.
Services of labourers working on contract basis with consolidated pay and honorarium must be regualrised in their respective workplaces.
Any violation of labour welfare laws must be viewed very seriously and cases under severe sections booked against the companies that infringe these regulations. Disinvestment of stake in public sector undertakings must be given up, they said.
The arrested persons were released in the evening.
