The 37 {+t} {+h} India Tourist and Industrial Fair with biodiversity as a theme will begin on Island Grounds here on December 1 and around 20 lakh people are expected to visit, said Tourism Minister Suresh Rajan on Tuesday.

Talking to reporters, he said though the event in the past began only in December- end, the Tourism Department had decided to advance it by a month. It would be held for 75 days.

The Minister said the fair, which attracted 9 lakh people and generated revenue of Rs.80 lakh in 2005, had become a major event owing to the efforts of the DMK government and generated Rs.2.07 crore last year.

Talking about the theme of the fair, he said the setting would be made in such a way that the visitors would get the feeling as if they were in Mudumalai Sanctuary. A total of 44 government departments, including two Central government departments, would take part in the fair.

He said Tamil Nadu had become the number one destination when it came to international tourism in the country. Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation A.C. Mohandas said his department had produced a 30-second promotional film in various languages. It would be telecast from Deepavali day.
