Toll collection for road users on NH -7A (Tuticorin – Tirunelveli) on Palayamkottai Road will resume from May 1, according to K. Thangavel, Project Director, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Madurai, and in-charge of Tirunelveli.

The toll plaza at Thattaparai junction, with eight counters, would be made operational as per the NHAI’s guidelines, he told The Hindu on Wednesday, when contacted.

There was no toll collection from vehicle users during the last eight to 10 months as some persons had filed a petition in the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court in 2013 against the NHAI for toll collection with incomplete road works.

The petitioners demanded shifting of the toll plaza to Vagaikulam beyond the airport.

The NHAI admitted that it was only a temporary structure to collect toll for the completed project and a permanent toll plaza would be constructed beyond the airport junction.

Based on the NHAI’s submission, Justices V. Ramasubramanian and V.M. Velumani on April 7, 2014 disposed of the writ petitions of five persons in this regard. The court also directed the NHAI to expedite the shifting of toll plaza within four months, he said.
