Coimbatore: Coimbatore District Farmers Association has convened a meeting of farmers’ associations and those seeking permission to tap toddy at Pollachi on January 3 at 10 a.m.

Government’s move

In a statement here, representatives of the association, A.K. Shanmugam, C. Thangaraj and K.K. Chandrasekhar said the Chief Minister on May 2 had stated that Government was examining ways to introduce toddy without causing problems in society.

Government was considering the demands of those seeking permission to tap toddy and those opposed to it, the release said.


Chief Minister had also stated that a commission of inquiry by former judge Sivasubramanian had been constituted to look into the demands.

The Commission had already completed its sittings at Madurai, Tirunelveli, Erode, Salem, Thanjavur, Thiruvannamalai.


If the decision was not favourable to farmers, they would resort to toddy tapping from January 21.
