In a tragic incident in Ambattur on Sunday, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy who peeked into a 75-ft deep well, accidently fell inside and drowned.

Ambattur police said, the boy, R. Nithesh was the son of Ramesh — a clothes inspector with a tailoring unit — and Saraswathi, who live in Indira Nagar, Ambattur. The incident took place around 6 p.m. when Nithesh was playing in front of the house and his father was talking to a friend nearby. His mother and elder brother were inside.

According to police, the ball Nithesh was playing with, fell inside the well which had water upto 20 ft. “To find the ball, the boy dragged a small stool, placed it near the well, stood on it and peered inside. He then lost his balance and fell in,” a police official said.

Ramesh and his friend realised the boy had fallen in, and shouted for help. They couldn't jump into the well as it had a width of only 2.5 ft. Police were alerted and Fire and Rescue Services personnel arrived and retrieved the body. Nithesh had drowned. Police have registered a case of unnatural death.
