Tirunelveli: Most of the statues of leaders are given a wash only on the day prior to the birth or death anniversaries of these late leaders as the present heads of political and communal outfits would feel it bad on seeing the droppings of birds on it. Or the pedestals of most of the statues are being used as a board to paste the posters of a recent box-office hit or welcoming a VIP.

When the Tirunelveli MLA, N. Maalairaja, saw the Anna statue at Tirunelveli Junction in a shabby condition with droppings and posters, he started cleaning it and gave repeated wash to it, much to the amusement of the passers-by.
