CHENNAI: The relocation of Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) to Greams Road has started and is expected to be completed soon.
This has been necessitated as the TNPSC building, located on Omanthoorar Government Estate, would be demolished to facilitate the construction of the upcoming Assembly complex.
The new premises on Greams Road has a built up area of 50,000 sq ft.
According to sources in the Commission, this is less than half the built up area of the old office of TNPSC, which had around 1.2 lakh sq ft built up area. The new premises also has relatively less parking space.
Officials said that considering the need for more space for the Commission's office, the new premises near the Commercial Tax office on Greams Road is a temporary arrangement. The State government had earlier considered various locations for relocating the TNPSC, particularly those with good transport connectivity, but a decision is awaited.
Large number of visitors
Meanwhile, officials are working on ways to cope with the large number of visitors to the new premises. The number of visitors had even touched 20,000 a day after notification of competitive examinations.
During such days, special efforts would have to be taken to relieve traffic congestion near the building because of the large number of vehicles of visitors, said an official. Around 4.5 lakh candidates had applied for the recent Group II examination.
