Tirupur: The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) ordered the closure of 65 dyeing units in Tirupur knitwear cluster on Monday for violating Supreme Court directive which forbids the dyeing units from discharging effluents into water bodies.

TNPCB District Environmental Engineer R. Kannan told reporters here that the dyeing units were not ensuring zero liquid discharge (ZLD) as directed by the court instead was discharging the untreated effluents into water bodies and hence, the action was necessitated.

“We have also disconnected power and water supply to these units exercising the powers vested under Section 33 A of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974,” he said.

Of the 65 units, 22 were members of Mannarai Common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP), 19 were members of Karaipudur CETP and the rest were members of Sirupooluvapatti CETP.
