Chief Minister urged to regularise their services

KANCHEEPURAM: Workers, employed on contract basis by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board during the previous DMK regime, have requested Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to regularise the services of all workers instead of restricting the number to 6000.

A group of contract workers of the Chengalpattu Distribution Division, claimed that while thousands of contract workers had been working for the past 20 years, only a few of them were selected for `bonus' through a direct interview conducted on August 8, 1998.

In a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister, they said while several pleas were made for extension of `bonus' facility to the left-out persons, additional benefit was granted to them in December 2005, that is, after seven years. In the meantime, a total of 1631 workers approached the Madras High Court and obtained a decree in favour of them on December 9, 2003.

However, the Madras High Court direction to regularise the services of petitioners was not fulfilled by the earlier Government.
