Selection Committee approval for the variety after 65 trials

TRY (R) 3 has higher flour yield for idli

Dishes prepared using it are delicious

TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu Agriculture University–Anbil Dharmalingam Agriculture College and Research Institute near here will release a new paddy variety next year. The variety, ideally suited for preparing breakfast, has been approved by the Selection Committee.

The duration of the coarse grain variety, which has been christened as ‘TRY (R) 3’, is between 120 and 135 days. The College took up a study on the advantages of the variety, in comparison to three existing crops, Dean G. Kathiresan, told presspersons here on Wednesday.

He said that the yield of ‘TRY (R) 3’ would be 13 per cent over the popular species of ‘CO-43’.

It would also account for higher flour yield for ‘idli’ by about 20 per cent over the conventional ‘CR-1009’ variety.

Mr. Kathiresan said that the College had set up 65 trials in different parts of the State.

A feedback from the faculty members and students of the college hostels also indicated that the dishes prepared using ‘TRY (R) 3’ variety were more delicious.

The College has earlier released two varieties suited for alkaline soil.
