Traffic disrupted on Commercial Road for over an hour
A case relating to a clash between supporters of the AIADMK and the TMMK and the subsequent arrest of five TMMK activists took a new turn on Tuesday.
Scores of supporters of the TMMK gathered at the Ooty Coffee House Junction and staged a demonstration.
As a result, traffic on the main Commercial Road was disrupted for over an hour. They raised slogans against the police. They were rounded up and removed by the police. Deputy Superintendent of Police, G.S.Anita, told The Hindu that 132 persons were arrested.
They were from Tirupur, Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, Sathyamangalam, Coonoor, Gudalur and Udhaga- mandalam.
She added that they were demanding the arrest of the AIADMK town secretary Raja Mohamed, former town secretary, T.K.Devaraj and AIADMK municipal councillor A.Imtiaz.
The five TMMK activists had been arrested here on Monday.
It followed a clash between them and some supporters of the AIADMK including Mr. Raja Mohamed here on Sunday.
The cause was a civil issue pertaining to the occupation of a business premises.
As a precautionary measure, police pickets have been posted in various parts of the town.
