Girls outperform boys in securing top spots, pass percentage

TIRUNELVELI: A.C. Rajabu Fatima of Bharath Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Ilanji, who secured State third rank in the matriculation examination in 2008, is sharing the district first rank with her classmate R. Ramya with 1,179 marks in the Plus Two examination results declared on Friday.

While S. Suganya of Rose Mary Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai, which has produced several State toppers in the past, scored 1,176 to bag the second rank, R. Shanmuga Ashok, also from Bharath Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Ilanji, came third with 1,175 marks.

Though R. Venkatakrishnan and U.T. Pranav of Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal Golden Jubilee Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Sankar Nagar, have scored 1,185 and 1,181 respectively, they were not considered for the ranks as French was their first language.

The striking similarity between the toppers is that all of them have stayed away from the television at least for the past two years and have worked hard at least till 11 p.m. and from 5 a.m. everyday. All of them thanked their teachers, parents, friends and relatives profusely for having achieved this feat.

While Rajabu Fatima, daughter of Abdul Khader Bhukari, partner of Chennai's famous restaurant chain, Hotel Bhukari, wants to become a doctor, all others have decided to join Anna University-Chennai.

Even as the girls have outclassed the boys as usual in all departments such as district toppers, pass percentage etc., the district has registered a significant rise in pass percentage from last year's 86.45 per cent to 91.39 per cent this year.

Number of boys appeared: 3,659; passed: 3,195; pass percentage: 87.32.

Number of girls appeared: 5,377; passed: 5,030; pass percentage: 93.55.

Tenkasi Educational District:

Number of students appeared: 9,076; Number of students passed: 8,318; Pass percentage: 91.65.

Number of boys appeared: 4,013; passed: 3,563; pass percentage: 88.79.

Number of girls appeared: 5,063; passed: 4,755; pass percentage: 93.92.

“Though most of our students are from middle class families with rural background, the students worked really hard and cooperated with the teachers right from the beginning of the academic year and hence we couldan produce district and even State toppers,” said a jubilant M. Kanthimathi, principal, Bharath Montessori Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Ilanji.
