Former Union Minister for Surface Transport Tindivanam G. Venkatraman (82) died here on Thursday following a brief illness.

Mr. Venkatraman, an advocate by profession, got elected to the Lok Sabha from Tindivanam constituency in 1996 on behalf of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

The DMK nominated him for a Cabinet post in the ministry of United Front government of H.D. Deve Gowda. He continued in the Cabinet of I.K. Gujral. He was imprisoned several times for taking part in political agitations. Earlier, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1989.

While offering his condolences to the family members of Venkatraman, DMK president M. Karunanidhi recalled that whenever he visited South Arcot district, Mr. Venkatraman never failed to accompany him.

Mr. Venkatraman is survived by three sons and a daughter.

Ex-MLC T.R. Janarthanam dead

Former Member of Legislative Council T.R. Janarthanam died due to prolonged illness. Dr. Janarthanam ran an organisation called the World Tamils’ Federation and was active in promotion of Tamil across the world. He was also involved with the Sri Lankan Tamil cause.

Mr. Karunanidhi offered his condolences to Janarthanam’s family of the deceased and recalled how the latter had taken active role in anti-Hindi agitation and campaigned for the cause of Lankan Tamils. In a statement, Mr. Karunanidhi said Mr. Janarthanam contested successfully in the Legislative Council elections from Coimbatore West Central Graduate constituency twice. He was a strong advocate of the revival of the Legislative Council, the DMK chief recalled.
