Corrective measures by the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at the right time on Monday averted an Air India flight from landing on a wrong runway and averted a possible air collision, at the airport here.

The flight on the Chennai-Tiruchi-Abu Dhabi sector was cleared for runway 9, airport sources said. However, the Boeing aircraft was approaching runway 27 owing to system error in the flight management system.

ATC staff who noticed the deviation immediately took corrective measures and the aircraft landed on runway 9 safely.

A Chennai-bound Jet Airways flight from Tiruchi had just taken off from runway 9 when the Air India flight was approaching runway 27.

Traffic information was passed on to the pilots of both aircraft by the ATC. The Air India flight later left for Abu Dhabi. Airport authorities here said the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) was investigating the matter.
