Coimbatore: Three persons were killed when a lorry laden with watermelon proceeding from Salem to Kerala fell into a roadside gorge near Madukkarai on the bypass road in the small hours of Thursday. The Madukkarai police and fire and rescue services personnel removed the lorry and recovered the bodies. The deceased have been identified as driver Sampath (44), cleaner Sherief (22) and Ezhumalai (55). Madukkarai police are investigating.

Jailor dies

Chandran (52), principal of the jail warder training school at Vellore on deputation as jailor at the Coimbatore Central Prison, was killed on the spot when he was knocked down by an autorickshaw on Tiruchi Road in the small hours of Thursday. The victim was having his morning walk when the accident took place.
