Three persons, who allegedly attempted to encroach forest land near here, were arrested on Wednesday.

According to District Forest Officer, the Nilgiris North, B. Sugirtharaj Koilpillai, the accused from the plains had entered land, which was listed under Combined Registry, near Sholur Kokkal village. Since they were trying to plough the land despite warnings, they were arrested and their tractor seized. A survey of the land would be undertaken to demarcate the areas belonging to the forest and the revenue department, he said. Meanwhile some members of the Kota tribal community, who claimed that the land belonged to them, took up the matter with the police demanding the release of those arrested.
