Tuticorin: Three persons accused in a murder case were sentenced to life imprisonment by a Tuticorin FTC – II here on Thursday. The Judge of Fast Track Court – II, S. Saathapillai, found the accused guilty in the case of setting fire Saraswathi, the victim, on January 18, 2008.
The accused were V. Soosaimariyan (33), Papathi (a) Cecily Papathi (65) and Saveria (a) Saveriyan (75) of the same family.
According to the prosecution, the accused tortured Saraswathi, wife of V. Soosaimariyan, on many occasions and set her ablaze at their home in Amutha Nagar, Tuticorin,. The victim suffered burn injuries. She was admitted to the GH. On January, 30, 2008, she succumbed to the burns. The police filed a case.
The accused were sentenced to undergo life imprisonment under Section 302 and imposed a fine of Rs.1, 000 each. Apart from life imprisonment, the Judge also ordered the accused to undergo three years rigorous imprisonment under Section 498 A for having allegedly tortured the victim. A fine of Rs. 500 each was imposed on them on a charge of torture to death.
