Gang involved in several cases of theft, says police officer

CHENNAI: Anna Nagar police have arrested two women and a man and recovered gold jewellery weighing 250 grams, Rs. 25,000 in cash and a cell phone from them.

Police formed a special team following several complaints of theft from bus passengers. Acting on a tip off, the team arrested Rathi (23), Madhavi (25) and Alagiri (25) inRazak Garden, Aminjakarai.

Deputy Commissioner of Police of Anna Nagar A. Arun said the gang's modus operandi was to let the women board crowded buses carrying a child in their arms.

They would then sit on the floor of the bus and under the pretext of putting the children to sleep, rifle the handbags of passengers.

Mr. Arun said the three were involved in theft cases in Anna Nagar, Aminjakarai, Arumbakkam and other suburban areas as well as Mayiladuthurai, Oothukuli, Malayanur and Tirupur in the districts.

With their arrest, seven cases had been solved, Mr. Arun said. He put the total value of the goods seized from them at Rs. 2.50 lakh. The three have been remanded to judicial custody.

Threat to narikoravas

A group of narikorava women from Anna Salai, Avadi,have presented a petition to the Commissioner of Police stating that they were being intimidated to vacate their homes.

The petition said they had been staying in the area for several years and the Government had given pattas to the land.

They alleged that Yadhagiri, a narikorava, had asked them to vacate their homes for a consideration of Rs. 5,000.
