Three child labourers working in mechanic workshops and units engaged in cleaning old bottles in Thanjavur were rescued by the Child Labour Eradication Committee on Tuesday.

The committee comprising representatives from Labour Department, Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA), and Child Line, a voluntary organisation, checked nearly 200 units, including mechanic and tinkering workshops, flower market, and units engaged in cleaning old bottles and shops in different parts of Thanjavur to check whether children were employed.

The checks led to the rescue of the three children aged below 14. Three others above the age of 14 were rescued. Steps had been taken to admit the children in schools.

“Cases had been booked against the units under Child Labour Prevention Act,” said A. Venkatesan, Labour Inspector.
