`Vaikasi Visakam' celebrated

Tuticorin: `Vaikasi Visakam' was celebrated with pomp and gaiety at the famous Lord Subramaniaswamy temple at Tiruchendur on Friday.

Over five lakh devotees visited the temple for `darshan' and offered prayers to Lord Muruga, after taking a holy dip in the nearby sea. Many of them came by walk from far off places carrying milk pots, as a ritual.

The sanctum sanctorum of the temple was opened to the devotees at 1 a.m. At 1.30 a.m., special poojas were conducted, followed by a series of `abhishekams.' Special poojas were conducted at Vasantha Mandapam, situated close to the temple.

To ease the rush, Tamil Nadu State Road Transport Corporation ran 40 additional buses from places like Tirunelveli, Valliyoor, Tuticorin and Madurai to Tiruchendur.

The district administration distributed drinking water to the devotees through 12 sheds established for the purpose at various parts of the town. As a precautionary measure, people who took holy dip in the sea were prevented from going deep into the water.
