It was made in Madurai

Following several complaints from the parents, the Corporation officials seized 11 jars of ‘thoothuvalai' candy from a stockist here on Thursday.

Children fall ill

After good number of children took ill on consuming the ‘thoothuvalai' candy being manufactured by a Madurai-based company, the corporation officials, led by Food Inspector A.R. Sankaralingam, raided a shop at Tirunelveli Junction and seized the candy.

A neuro physician here, who attended one of the victims, said the candy had been prepared with an allopathic medicine normally used to stop vomiting.

“The prime target of the vendors selling these candies is the passengers boarding the buses in the bus-stands as they sell it as an anti-vomiting agent and memory-enriching agents,” he said.

Sent for analysis

Some of the seized candies have been sent for analysis, Mr. Sankaralingam said.
