Tiruvannamalai: S. Silvia Betsy, student of Jeeva Velu Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tiruvannamalai, has secured 1,167 marks in the higher secondary examination and emerged district topper.

She has expressed her desire to become a paediatrician.

“The Managing Director, principal and teachers of our school, my parents and grandmother encouraged me a lot. I used to study two hours in the evening, one hour in the night and again two hours in the morning. I used to go to bed by 10.30 p.m. and get up at 4 a.m. My parents never put any pressure on me,” Betsy said.

Her father, P.T.L. Shankar, has a self-financing school in Chettipattu near Tiruvannamalai, and her mother, Julie, is a government school teacher.

V.P. Jaganath of Mount St. Joseph Matric. Higher Secondary School, Tiruvannamalai, secured 1,163 marks and was placed second in Tiruvannamalai district.

Expressing a desire to become an astronomer, Jaganath said, “I used to read my lessons on my own before teachers taught them in the class. It helped me understand them better when teachers explained in the class.” His father, V. Prabulingam, is a Commercial Tax Officer and his mother, Latha, president of Tiruvannamalai chapter of Sakthi EXNORA.

M. Amutha of Sishya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tiruvannamalai, was placed thirdwith 1,157 marks.
