A month-long student enrolment drive organised by Sarva Siksha Abhiyan begins
MADURAI: A students' rally and door-to-door campaign to ensure enrolment of all children between five and 14 years in schools marked the inauguration of the month-long `student enrolment' drive organised by the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, here on Saturday.
As part of the campaign, a rally was organised involving 500 National Service Scheme students from The American College Higher Secondary School, St. Mary's HSS, Madurai Corporation Elango Higher Secondary School, Virudhunagar Hindu Nadar Higher Secondary School, Madurai Corporation Thiru. Vi. Ka. Higher Secondary School, Al-Ameen Higher Secondary School, Sourashtra Boys Higher Secondary School and Madurai Corporation Kakkai Padiniyar Higher Secondary School for Girls.
The rally, which was flagged off at Tamukkam grounds, went past Gandhi Museum, District Collector's Office, Anna Bus Stand and culminated at Thevar Statue.
The participating students raised slogans stressing enrolment of all eligible children in schools, against discontinuation of studies and hailing education for all through SSA.
The main objective of the programme was to provide compulsory school education to all eligible children.
During this drive the SSA has planned to involve all Government staff for its month-long door-to-door campaign in which they would visit all houses in villages and convince the parents to send their wards to school, said a department official.
If the child happened to be a recent school dropout, the SSA would make efforts to get it admitted to school immediately. If the student had discontinued studies long time back, he or she would be taken to Alternative Inclusive Education Centres, where they would be motivated and inspired for two to three months to make them fit to join mainstream school education, the official informed.
The rally was a prelude to the month-long drive.
District Collector T. Udhayachandran flagged off the rally at the Tamukkam grounds. K. Sridevi, Chief Educational Officer and District Programme Coordinator, SSA, S. Subbaian, District Elementary Education Officer, and M. Masanam, Assistant District Programme Coordinator, SSA, took part.
NSS programme officers and teachers also participated in the rally.
