The People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, has demanded the release of 11 activists who were arrested on Friday on their way to Kudankulam.

In a statement, PUCL’s State president S. Saraswathi said that they had learnt from press reports that the group of 11 human rights activists from Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and New Delhi, along with their Tamil Nadu counterparts, who were on a fact-finding mission about police repression, were held without reason. The police then spread the canard that they possessed serious and sensitive literature.

“This is a deliberate misinformation campaign meant to intimidate the rights activists who are educated and concerned citizens,” she said, demanding their immediate release and dropping of the cases against them.

The PUCL condemned the persistent police assault to repress human rights defenders which was inconsistent with the mandate of UN conventions.
