The programme agenda of ‘Maamadurai Potruvom,’ scheduled from February 8 to February 10 was announced by Collector Anshul Mishra and chairman of organising committee Karumuttu T. Kannan here on Tuesday.
The celebrations will begin on February 7 with the lighting of ‘Madurai Deepam’ at Kidaripatti near Alagarkoil. Archaeological expert Santhalingam will light the torch which will be taken to Keelakuyilkudi, Thenparankundram, Kunnathur and Yanaimalai. On February 8, the Deepam will be taken to Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, St Mary’s Church and Goripalayam Mosque, following which freedom fighter K. Lakshmikanthan Bharathi will light it at Tamukkam Grounds.
On February 9, Governor K. Rosaiah will address the gathering at Tamukkam Grounds at 12.30 p.m. and will flag off the carnival from Madura College. On February 10, a seminar on the different eras of Madurai will be organised at Tamukkam Grounds. Cooperation Minister Sellur. K. Raju will inaugurate the ceremony of lighting lamps on river vaigai at 5 p.m. This will be followed by a laser show and firecracker show.
On all three days of the festival, seminars, cultural performances and literary programmes will be organised at Tamukkam Grounds in the evening.
On Tuesday, the Collector visited Madura College where works for the carnival are under way
