Exer-cycle, dumbbells provided for men in khaki
PONDICHERRY: In their busy lives, policemen may not have the time to do physical exercise or walk/jog to keep themselves fit.
Policemen of U-1 Kotakuppam Police Station near Pondicherry have no excuse now as equipment such as exer-cycle and dumbbells have been provided to them in the station itself by the Tamil Nadu Government.
The station got its new exer-cycle and dumbbells only on Saturday and already policemen are cycling whenever they have the time.
The police station, situated in Villupuram district, has an inspector, 2 sub-inspectors and 24 police constables and some 5-6 policemen use the exer-cycle in the mornings and the others use it as and when they walk in.
And this is not a one-station phenomenon, say policemen, adding that such equipment has been given to other police stations as well. "The Government has issued orders that all the policemen attached to the station must make use of the equipment and our men are taking it seriously," says V.N. Harikumar, sub-inspector.
"I don't have much of an opportunity to walk and exercise since I travel mostly by bike or jeep and so this exer-cycle is very useful to me. I have started off by pedalling for 15 minutes every day," adds Mr. Harikumar.
Ilango, head constable, a body builder, says he will make use of the dumbbells. "I do a lot of exercises to keep my body fit. I have two sets of dumbbells, one at home and another here in the station. I got myself a pair so that I can exercise when I feel like it. Now these dumbbells will also be useful. Others can also use them to keep their bodies fit," he adds.
P. Dhamodaran, a constable, says the exer-cycle is a boon to him as he can stretch himself while at work also. "I am a diabetic and following the advice of my doctor I have been exercising at home for nearly 7 years now. With this exer-cycle in the station, I can work out here too."
