Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development Shashi Tharoor inspected Saakshar Bharat (an adult literacy programme known in the State as Karkum Bharatham) centres in three villages of Cheyyar taluk on Thursday.

He visited the centres in Mamandur, Perungalathur and Keel Puduppakkam villages.

Women in Mamandur reportedly told him that earlier they were not able to read boards in the bus and now with the help of the programme they became literate and can read boards of the bus, name boards of shops, street names etc. on their own.

A woman was able to write the Minister’s name in black board without mistake in his presence.

The women proudly stated that they now put their signature in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) registers instead of thumb impression.

Mr. Tharoor participated in a consultation programme on the adult literacy programme held in Cheyyar and expressed satisfaction on how the programme was implemented in the State.
