TIRUCHI: The 117 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) The Guards, Tiruchi, will organise a host of events here in connection with the 60th Territorial Army (TA) Day celebrations.
The highlight of the week-long celebrations, which concludes on December 7, will be the ceremonial parade by TA personnel from St. Joseph’s College to Corporation Office on December 4.
Addressing the media here on Tuesday, the Commanding Officer of 117 Infantry Battalion (TA) The Guards Colonel K. Haridas said a ‘Run for a Cause’; Garuda Golf Tournament; Volleyball matches and entertainment programmes by school and college students would be the other events that would be organised as part of the Diamond Jubilee of the Territorial Army.
Around 1,000 students would take part in the 3-km ‘Run for a Cause’ that would be inaugurated by Transport Minister K.N. Nehru on December 5.
Around 10 to 15 items would form part of the variety entertainment programmes to be held on December 7 at the Roshan Mahal.
Colonel Haridas said the 117 Infantry Battalion (TA) The Guards, Tiruchi would celebrate the Golden Jubilee next year.
The unit was originally raised at Secunderabad on October 1, 1960 and later moved to Tiruchi in 1964. The unit was affiliated to the Brigade of the Guards, the senior most Infantry regiment of the Indian Army raised by the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa.
Col. Haridas said the 117 Infantry Battalion (TA), The Guards also called as ‘Trichy Terriers’ had actively participated with the regular army during the 1965 and 1971 wars.
The unit has been involved in counter insurgency operations in Assam and Jammu & Kashmir for the last three decades.
The ‘Trichy Terriers’ is the first TA unit to be under the first Integrated Inter Service Andaman & Nicobar Command.
