Tense situation prevailed in Valparai on Sunday following the desecration of idols at five places of worship. The Valparai police have posted security at all places of worship of all faiths to ensure communal harmony. A case has been registered.
The city police have arrested a 31-year-old woman on charges of using a forged passport. The Peelamedu police said that Uma of Cuddalore was caught using a forged passport when she was on her way to board a flight to Sharjah. The passport she carried had the details of Mangayarkarasi of Villupuram district and on questioning, she was unable to provide a convincing answer, the police said.
The police have arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly smuggling rice meant for public distribution. The police said during a routine inspection, Mohamad Hanifa of Madukkarai was found carrying the rice. During interrogation, he confessed to attempting to smuggle the rice to Kerala. He was arrested and a bag of 45 kg of rice was seized from him.
The police have arrested two persons for allegedly duping people by promising jobs. Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu told reporters that Kaleeswaran, 33, of Pollachi and Rasiya alias Usharani of Neelikonampalayam ran employment offices at two places in the city.
They promised jobs at leading private companies and collected processing fee from around 500 persons who approached them. As those who paid the money waited for long without receiving the appointment orders, they complained to the police. A police team investigated the complaints and arrested the duo. The team is on the look out for Selvakumar, who is said to be an accomplice.
