THANJAVUR: Police made a prize catch on Thursday when a special team led by Mr.Thamizhselvan, Inspector of Police, South police station, arrested Melvin Sahayaraj (28) and Ayyappan who were involved in a temple theft, and Sudhakar, accused in a murder case.

Melvin and Ayyappan were involved in the theft of Maragathalingam worth Rs. 4 crore from Maruntheeswarar Temple at Thiruthuraipoondi. “They were the main accused,” said R.Thirugnanam, Deputy Inspector General of police, Thanjavur range,

They were involved in various cases of looting and burglaries in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Chennai and Thiruvannamalai. They have stolen articles worth Rs. 1 crore in 40 cases. Articles stolen in 14 cases have been recovered by the police. Police have recovered Rs. 4,30,000 cash, 310 grams of gold jewellery, 700 grams of silver jewellery, a Santro car purchased using the stolen money _all worth Rs. 15 lakh. Sudhakar is a wanted in a murder case at Kumbakonam in 2004. An arrest warrant is pending against him.
