Udhagamandalam: Train services on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) line between Ooty and Mettupalayam were cancelled on Wednesday. It was on account of the damage caused to the rack and pinion track below Coonoor on Tuesday.

Railway sources told ‘The Hindu’ that as the Mettupalayam-bound train was proceeding near Kattery the driver had brought it to halt due to a technical snag. The passengers were sent by government buses to Mettupalayam. Maintenance staff and officers from the plains set right the damage and brought the affected train to Coonoor on Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, a regular commuter who was on the train said that hundreds of passengers, mostly tourists, were subjected to considerable inconvenience.

Lamenting that such incidents have of late become common, he said that though senior officials were aware of the problems, precious little was being done to find a lasting solution.

Pointing out that the neglect of the NMR has become a source of concern to various sections of the society, consumer activists said that though it had been recognised as a World Heritage Site and its popularity among the domestic and foreign tourists was steadily rising, the railway authorities were not giving it the importance it deserved, especially in matters relating to its maintenance.
