THENI: Teachers must act responsibly keeping in mind students' future. They should act as role models to help students to emulate them, M. Thirumalai, Additional Controller of Examinations, Madurai Kamaraj University, has said.

He was delivering the convocation address at Theni Kammavar Sangam College of Education at Koduvilarpatti near here on Wednesday.

Some university teachers, particularly those who corrected examination papers, were money minded and were viewing teaching as a business.

"Such ideas should be totally removed. The teaching profession should not be used to detain students," he said.

Recalling a bitter experience he had at a paper valuation centre, Mr. Thirumalai said that teachers should change their mental attitude and correct papers in a sincere manner. Instead of finding faults to cut marks, they should find ways to allot more wherever possible as each answer sheet decided the future of a student.

Elaborating the importance Bharathiyar poems and Thirukkural, he said that reading those works would be an exercise for better pronunciation.

Degree certificates were distributed to 75 students.
