Udhagamandalam: The announcement made by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the Assembly on Friday that the Government would provide an additional support price of Rs. 1,400 per acre to small tea growers is welcomed by farmers in the district.
While supporters of the ruling party burst crackers and distributed sweets, many associations and individuals sent fax messages thanking the Chief Minister.
President of Young Badagas' Association (YBA) T. Rangaiah said that the small tea growers were happy about the announcement.
General Secretary of the 'Porangadu Seemai' Welfare Association A. Kari Gowder said that though a lasting solution to the problems of the growers continued to be elusive, the offer to give an additional support price had made the farmers happy.
However, some farmers said that though such schemes were of immense help to them, all should join hands to enable them get remunerative prices for their produce continuously. It should be ensured that all the eligible tea growers benefited from the additional support price scheme.
