SALEM: Salem Corporation will launch an intense drive to augment the collection of property tax and water cess arrears.
Addressing a meeting of officials, Corporation Commissioner Dr. K. S. Palanisamy asked the officials to intensify the collection in all the four zones and through mobile collection centres. He said that for the past three years the civic body’s overdue had increased to a staggering amount of Rs. 3 crore. He said that 14,521 households had to pay the property taxes and nearly 6,000 were yet to pay water cess.
The commissioner insisted that special camps would be held for two days in each zone to clear the arrears. All the doubts concerning with taxes should be cleared. The officials should take the message to the residents that they should pay tax immediately. Even public address systems should be used to warn them. “If they still fail to pay, deterrent actions such as snapping of drinking water lines should be resorted to,” he said.
The commissioner further fixed a target of Rs 1.25 crore per week from four zones of the Corporation.
