NAMAKKAL: Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare S. Gandhiselvan called upon the self-help group members in rural areas to take up self-employment activities.
Inaugurating the new branch of Canara Bank in Mallasamudram near here recently, the minister said that the SHG members could generate more employment opportunities for the people in rural areas by starting micro and small enterprises.
The minister appealed to the banks to extend liberal credit to the self-help group members, enabling them to start micro and small enterprises.
Earlier, Mr. Gandhiselvan handed over free colour television sets in Elachipalayam block.
Speaking on the occasion, he urged the people belonging to families listed below the poverty line to register their names under the Kalaignar Insurance scheme for life saving treatments.
Over 3.85 lakh families in the district had been photographed for the distribution of identity cards under the scheme.
Over 1,300 persons were given treatment, he added.
