The Erode District Council of All India Trade Union Congress has urged the Central and State governments to take effective measures to control the spiralling prices of construction materials.

The sharp increase in the prices of cement, brick, blue metal and steel had severely affected the construction activities in the country.

A large number of labourers in the construction sector were rendered jobless due to the spiralling prices. The Central Government should look into this issue seriously and bring in more effective measures to rein in the prices.

A resolution to this effect was adopted at a meeting of the council held here recently. Members of the council urged the government to fix the prices for the building materials.

In another resolution, members of the council wanted the State Government to enhance the financial assistance given to the labourers in the construction and various unorganised sectors. Accident relief, maternity assistance, pension and marriage assistance should be increased, they demanded.

District president T. Stalin Gunasekaran presided over the meeting.
