District Planning Committee meeting plea to administration
‘Rs. 1.25 crore allotted for the construction of buildings for the taluk office’

SALEM: The District Planning Committee has urged the district administration to initiate immediate efforts to construct buildings for the Vazhapadi taluk office.
Committee chairman Shanmugam submitted a petition in this regard during the committee meeting held here on Monday. The State Government, he claimed, allotted Rs. 1.25 crore for the construction of buildings for the taluk office, as it was functioning in a rented building. But the officials caused inordinate delay in identifying a site the construction of the office.
As a result, the amount was returned back to the government, he alleged.
The chairman also appealed to the administration to remove the encroachments on the lands allotted for the Sri Lankan refugees in Vazhapadi area. The houses constructed on the lands for the refugees were occupied by a few persons. The administration should initiate stern action against those persons and vacate them from the houses, he demanded.
Members also urged the officials to initiate action against the managements of private schools which were collecting donation for admission. To a question, officials said that financial assistance would be extended to all eligible women under Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Maternity Benefit Scheme, even if they were admitted for delivery in private hospitals.
District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam, elected representatives and senior officials were present.
