Students of a private polytechnic in Batlagundu thronged the Collectorate here on Wednesday, seeking action against their Principal for making them wait outside the classroom till 3 p.m. In a petition, they stated that two students had swooned and another two made suicide attempts as the college slapped a fine of Rs.500 on each student for their absence from classes. They were warned that delay in making payment will lead to increase in the fine amount. The college had been collecting huge sums of money in the name of fines from students. Two students, who had attempted to commit suicide by consuming poisonous seeds, had been admitted to Theni Government Medical College Hospital on Tuesday.
