Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy inaugurated a new system to register complaints over telephone on shortcomings in fair price shops, at the Collectorate here on Saturday.
The Minister attended the first call on the toll free telephone number 1070 from a woman in Kaanai, who told him that she could not get her rightful sugar entitlement from the fair price shop for the past three months.
Mr. Ponmudy said that officials of the Co-operative Department would reach her place within half-an-hour to take corrective measures. Later, he said that ration card-holders could call up this number to pass on information on the functioning of fair price shops in their areas.
They could inform the officials whether all essential commodities were available in right quantity, whether the shops were adhering to the time schedule, etc.
