The Postgraduate & Research Department of Microbiology, Adhiparasakthi College of Arts and Science, Kalavai, is organising Enpro'11, a national symposium on microbial enzymes and probiotics at the college on October 28.

The symposium is being held in the light of the fact that the uses of microbial enzymes in food, pharmaceutical, textile, paper, leather and other industries are numerous and increasing rapidly. ‘Probiotics' represents one of the fastest growing segments in nutritional supplements. The symposium will emphasise novel techniques employed in the production of microbial enzymes and probiotics. It will also throw light on the industrial applications of microbial enzymes. The potential of probiotics in clinical application will be discussed. At present, much enzyme research is under way in various industries, including the enzyme industry. Such research is devoted to finding new and improved methods for using enzymes, improving yields of industrial microbial enzymes and finding new enzymes for industrial purpose.

Eminent resource persons including K. Jeevaratnam of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Pondicherry University, Puducherry, Sulochana Somasundaram of the Department of Biotechnology, Sri Venkateswara Engineering College, Sriperumbudur, and G. Narasimha of the Applied Microbiology Laboratory, Department of Virology, Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, will be delivering lectures.
